Overcome jet lag / rest day

relaxing in Geneva

No riding today, just relax and overcome your jet lag or explore nearby. There is so much to see and do in and around Geneva that some will want to continue sightseeing although this day is really intended for those who travelled far to overcome any jet lag with a restful day before the tour begins.

If you go sightseeing just bear in mind that we shall collect the bikes late afternoon so that we can get off early tomorrow morning.

Please be back at the hotel by 17:00. This will allow you time to inspect your motorcycle, familiarise yourself with the controls and ensure any riding gear reserved for the tour is a comfortable fit.

Annemasse to Praz de Lys circuit ~ 60 miles / 100 km ~ 2 hours riding

The road aheadSpend the day as you please. There is much to see and do in and around Geneva  or simply take a rest especially if you have travelled for or are siuffering jet lag.

Riders are requested to return to the hotel by 16:00 so that they can be issued their motorcycles.

To help acquaint riders with their bikes we take an evening ride up to Le Praz De Lys where you will have views towards Mont Blanc. There is a nice restaurant here where we stop for dinner before riding back via Bonneville to Annemasse.

Annemasse to Grindalwald ~ 270km / 145 miles ~ 6 hours riding

We begin the day with a relaxed departure from our hotel near Annemasse, heading south-west on a gentle 45-minute ride to the elegant spa town of Thonon-les-Bains. Nestled on the shores of Lac Leman (also known as Lake Geneva or Lac de Genève), this town offers a chance to explore its lakeside charm. For those interested, a ride on the historic funicular railway provides a scenic descent toward the lakefront, offering panoramic views of the water and surrounding hills.

After a brief stop, we press onward through the verdant Abondance Valley, passing alpine meadows and traditional chalets en route to the mountain village of Chatel. From here, we ascend the Morgins Pass, crossing into Switzerland. The tranquil Lac de Morgins and the dramatic Dents du Midi mountain range, named for their jagged, midday sunlit peaks, provide stunning vistas. We pause here for a light refreshment and a chance to take in the scenery.

GrindalwaldContinuing through the Parc Naturel Regional Gruyere, the terrain becomes more challenging. Just east of Morgins, we encounter our first series of hairpin bends, followed by a stretch of twisty roads leading to the Col de la Croix and Col du Pillon. These mountain passes offer exhilarating riding and breathtaking alpine views as we make our way to the chic resort town of Gstaad, where we stop for lunch.

After lunch, the route continues along winding roads through the Bernese Oberland, offering a thrilling ride all the way to Interlaken. From there, we ascend toward the iconic Eiger mountain, concluding the day in Grindelwald, a picturesque alpine village nestled beneath towering peaks, where we’ll rest and reflect on a day filled with natural beauty and mountain adventure.

Grindelwald to Sarnen ~ 190 miles ~ 304 km ~ 6 hours riding

Our journey continues into the Aare Gorge, a narrow canyon carved by glacial waters, offering a dramatic contrast of rock and river. We then ascend the Grimsel Pass, a high mountain route with sweeping views and winding roads, where we take our first refreshment break of the day amidst the rugged alpine landscape.

The little church beside Hotel Tiefenbach on the Furka PassFrom Grimsel, we cross the Furka Pass, one of Switzerland's most iconic mountain roads, passing the Rhone Glacier, the source of the mighty Rhone River. The descent leads us to Andermatt, a charming mountain town with a rich history and alpine character. From here, we loop back toward Meiringen, this time via the Susten Pass, a thrilling route with sweeping curves and panoramic views. We take a brief stop at Himmelrank, or "Paradise Corner" which offers stunning vistas into the Gadmen Canyon below.

Lunch awaits in Innertkirchen, a quiet village nestled between mountain ranges, providing a peaceful break before the final leg of the day. After lunch, we ride past the serene Lungerersee, a lake surrounded by forested slopes and alpine meadows. The route then climbs the Glaubenbielen Pass, a lesser-known but beautiful road offering expansive views and a tranquil riding experience. 

We end the day in Sarnen, a lakeside town with a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for unwinding after a day of exhilarating mountain roads and breathtaking scenery.

Sarnen to Bad Hindelang ~ 175 miles / 280 km ~ 5 hours riding

FurkapassToday's ride is a spectacular journey through central Switzerland and into southern Germany, with a focus on lake-hopping and scenic mountain roads. We begin by leaving the peaceful shores of Sarnensee and head toward Wichelsee, a small but picturesque lake nestled in the Obwalden region. From there, we continue to Alpnachersee, a fjord-like lake surrounded by steep forested slopes.

Our route then takes us to the majestic Vierwaldstattersee, also known as Lake Lucerne, which is actually composed of three interconnected basins: Luzernersee, Kussnachtersee, and the main body of Vierwaldstattersee. Riding along its shores offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and historic towns. We then pass Zugersee, a serene lake near the city of Zug, before stopping for a well-earned break at Obersee, a tranquil spot perfect for a short rest.

From Obersee, the road begins to twist and climb as we make our way toward Bodensee (Lake Constance), passing through charming villages and alpine towns. The scenery shifts from lakeside tranquility to rolling hills and forested valleys. We arrive in Bregenz, a vibrant lakeside city in Austria just north of the Lichtenstein border, where we stop for lunch and enjoy the views across Lake Constance.

After lunch, we cross the border into Germany and join the western end of the Deutsche Alpenstrasse, Germany’s famed Alpine Road. This legendary route winds through the Bavarian Alps, offering some of the finest riding in Europe. We end the day in Bad Hindelang, a picturesque mountain town with excellent leisure facilities. This will be our base for the next two nights, providing a comfortable and scenic retreat after a day filled with lakes, passes, and unforgettable roads.

Bad Hindelang circuit ~ 112 miles / 180 km ~ 3 hours riding

Morning view from hotel balcony at Bad HindelangSome might want a day of rest whilst others will be itching to get back on the bike, and so today, we have a shorter journey for those who want to ride.

This scenic alpine route from our hotel heads west along Zillenbachstraße and winding through the picturesque Allgau region. The journey quickly immerses you in lush valleys and forested hills as you pass through Beslerstrasse and continue toward the tranquil village of Tannen. The roads here are quiet and well-maintained, offering a relaxed ride through rolling countryside.

Crossing into Austria, the route leads to Faschina via the Faschinastrasse, a mountain road known for its sweeping curves and panoramic views. The ascent offers glimpses of alpine meadows and rugged peaks, making it a favourite among motorcyclists and touring enthusiasts. From Faschina, the road descends gently toward Heimboden, a peaceful hamlet nestled in the Vorarlberg region.

The raod then climbs again, heading northeast toward the town of Tannheim, where Kirchplatz offers a charming spot for a short break. This area is rich in Tyrolean architecture and surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery.

The final leg of the route loops back toward Oberstdorf, concluding back at Die Gams Hotel where we shall later dine in the Restaurant. This is a welcoming spot for those who chose to relax and for the others to reflect on the day’s ride. With a mix of winding mountain passes, serene lakeside stretches, and traditional alpine villages, this route offers a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural charm, ideal for a leisurely day ride through the heart of the Alps.

Bad Hindelang to Davos ~ 175 miles / 280 km ~ 5.5 hours riding

We begin by riding the latter part of yesterday's circuit in reverse crossing over to Austria and continuing as far as Elmen where we join the Hahntennjoch a high Alpen pass (1894m/6214ft) which is also referred to as Bschlaber Landesstrasse. We shall of course stop for photographs and take a light refreshment at Imst before continuing south to the Italian border.

After descending from Hahntennjoch, we take a short refreshment break at Nauders, a charming Austrian town. The music bar here is a great spot for an evening BBQ (I know you love a BBQ!), but today we'll keep it brief and light.

Looking down the Stelvio PassTurning south, we re-enter Italy and ascend the legendary Stelvio Pass (2758m/9048ft), one of the most iconic mountain roads in the Eastern Alps. With 60 hairpin turns, 48 on the northern side, it's a bucket-list ride for many motorcyclists. We will stop for lunch at the summit and enjoy the dramatic views.

Next, we cross into Switzerland via the Fuorn Pass (2149m/7050ft), also known as Ofenpass. This scenic route traverses the Swiss National Park and offers chances to spot wildlife, including the occasional brown bear. Historically, the area was known for ironworks (Fuorn means furnace), and there's a caravan selling snacks perfect for a short break.

Finally, we head north to the Fluela Pass (2389m/7838ft) in the canton of Graubunden, traditionally considered the boundary between the Albula and Silvretta Alps. Connecting Davos with Susch in the Engadin valley, the pass features stunning alpine scenery and picturesque lakes like Lai da la Scotta and Lai Nair. Though dating from 1867, the paved road offers a thrilling ride with twists and turns popular among motorcyclists.

Davos to Locarno ~ 160 miles / 256 km ~ 5 hours riding

This ride takes us deep into the heart of the Swiss Alps as we leave the mountain resort of Davos. Heading southwest, we make our way toward Alvra, enjoying sweeping alpine views and crisp mountain air. From here, we turn southeast to tackle the Albulapass, a high-altitude road known for its dramatic switchbacks and stunning scenery. The descent brings us to La Punt Chamues, a quiet village nestled in the Engadin valley.

Continuing south, we reach the glamorous town of St. Moritz, where we take a brief stop to enjoy the lakeside views and perhaps a coffee in one of its stylish cafes. The route then leads us past the shimmering lakes of Champfer and Silvaplana, both framed by towering peaks and lush forests.

Evening sun over Lago MaggioreWe then deviate westward to ascend the Julier Pass, another spectacular alpine road offering panoramic vistas. Descending from the pass, we pass Lake Marmorera and begin loosely following the Albula River northward to the town of Thusis. From here, we turn south again toward the tranquil Sufnersee, a peaceful lake surrounded by steep slopes and dense woodland. A little further on, we reach Splugen, where we stop for lunch in a traditional alpine setting.

The final leg of the journey takes us over the San Bernardino Pass, a thrilling ride with sweeping curves and dramatic elevation changes. We continue along the Strada del Piana, passing through charming villages and valleys, before arriving in Misox. The day concludes in Locarno, a lakeside town on the northern shore of Lago Maggiore, where our hotel offers stunning views across the water and it is an ideal place to unwind after a day of unforgettable alpine riding.

Locarno to Susa ~ 182 miles / 291 km ~ 6 hours riding

The journey begins with a scenic ride heading west along the tranquil Melzza River, which gently winds its way into the northern reaches of Lago Maggiore. This picturesque stretch offers glimpses of alpine waters and lush riverbanks, setting a peaceful tone for the day. We continue until reaching Santa Maria Maggiore, a charming town nestled in the valley, where we shift course to follow the Melzzo Occidentale upstream. This tributary leads us to the Toce River, another vital waterway that also feeds into Lago Maggiore near the lakeside village of Feriolo.

Following the Toce southward, we arrive at Gravellona Toce, a small but lively town where we pause for a brief rest. Convento Boutique Hotel SusaThis stop allows us to stretch our legs and enjoy the local ambiance before continuing our journey.

Our route then veers further south toward the serene Lago d'Orta, a lesser-known gem surrounded by forested hills. From here, we head westward into the Valsesia region, passing through Varallo, a town rich in history and known for its sacred mount. Next, we follow the Sesia River southward, tracing its path through Borgosesia and onward to Biella, a city nestled at the foot of the Alps that offers a perfect spot for a leisurely lunch and a chance to explore its textile heritage.

In the afternoon, we set our sights towards Turin, the elegant capital of Piedmont. We don't plan to enter the city, but will take our final rest stop just north of Turin to refresh. The day concludes with a westward turn toward Susa, a town steeped in Roman history. Here, we settle into a boutique hotel housed within a beautifully preserved 800-year-old building that once belonged to a religious order, an atmospheric and restful end to a day rich in natural beauty and cultural discovery.

Suas to Annemasse ~160 miles / 256 km ~ 5.5 hours riding

Departing from the historic town of Susa, we begin our ascent into the Alps, crossing the border into France near the stunning Lac du Mont Cenis. The lake’s turquoise waters and surrounding peaks offer a breathtaking start to the day. Our first break is at Glieres-Val-de-Borne, a peaceful alpine village ideal for a quick refreshment and a chance to soak in the mountain air.

Continuing north, we tackle the legendary Col de l'Iseran, standing at 2,764 metres (9,068 ft). As the highest paved mountain pass in both France and the Alps, it offers dramatic views and a thrilling ride. Descending from the pass, we skirt the Lac du Chevril reservoir before arriving in Tignes, a lively resort town nestled along the Isère River. Depending upon our progress we might pause for lunch because there are a variety of dining options available. Though a bit further on we have a stop with a magnificent vista across a lake.

a view of Lac du Roseland from our Lunch stopOur second lunch option, arrives after we head northwest along quiet backroads near the French-Italian border, reaching Lac de Roseland (as pictured right). A small chapel on the lake’s edge provides a perfect photo opportunity, with the serene waters and surrounding peaks creating a postcard-worthy scene abd a restaurant further ahead commands great views.

We then deviate toward Beaufort, renowned for its cheese production and alpine charm. Continuing north, we reach Les Frumiers for a short refreshment break, though parking requires care, as the town is built on a slope!

As we traverse lesser-known mountain roads, Mont Blanc frequently appears to the east, its snow-capped summit dominating the skyline. Being a weekend, we may share the road with groups of cyclists, especially on steeper climbs. The day concludes with a scenic ride through quiet countryside, ending at our hotel near Annemasse, where comfort and relaxation await after a day of alpine adventure.
