Faro Airport to Tavira ~ 128km / 80 miles ~ 2.5 hours riding
After collecting our motorcycles at Faro Airport, we avoid the busy coastal resorts and head immediately for the quieter roads of the Algarve interior. The route soon picks up a network of little-used country roads that provide the perfect introduction to riding in southern Portugal.
The landscape quickly changes as we leave the coast behind. Quiet roads wind through rolling hills dotted with almond, olive and cork trees, while traditional villages offer a glimpse of the authentic Algarve that many visitors never see. With generally light traffic and excellent road surfaces, riders can relax into the rhythm of the tour from the very first day.
Heading north through the heart of the countryside, the roads become increasingly flowing and enjoyable as we approach the remote hills close to Martinlongo. This sparsely populated region feels a world away from the busy holiday coastline, with wide-open views across ridges and valleys stretching into the distance.
From Martinlongo, the route turns south and begins a delightful run towards Tavira. A succession of sweeping bends and gentle descents lead through a landscape of cork forests, small farms and whitewashed hamlets, providing some of the first hints of the riding terrain that awaits over the coming days.
As the road gradually descends towards the eastern Algarve, the views open out and the influence of the nearby Atlantic becomes more apparent. The approach to Tavira provides a fitting end to the day's ride, arriving at our elegant five-star hotel, a beautifully restored former convent in the heart of this historic riverside town.
Covering approximately 80 miles, this opening ride is not about covering distance quickly. Instead, it is designed to help riders settle into their motorcycles, enjoy the scenery and begin discovering why the Algarve has become one of Europe's finest winter motorcycling destinations.
Tavira is often regarded as one of the Algarve's most beautiful and authentic towns. Straddling the tranquil Gilão River, it combines rich history, traditional architecture and a relaxed atmosphere that makes it an ideal base for exploring southern Portugal. Its cobbled streets, elegant townhouses, ancient churches and iconic Roman bridge reflect centuries of Roman, Moorish and Portuguese influence. The town's riverside cafés and squares provide a welcoming place to pause and watch local life unfold, while nearby Tavira Island offers miles of unspoilt sandy beaches and crystal-clear Atlantic waters. Blending cultural heritage with natural beauty, Tavira captures the timeless charm of the eastern Algarve.

Tavira to Serra de Monchique circuit ~ 263km / 164 miles ~5.5 hours riding
Starting from the historic town of Tavira, this circular Algarve ride combines sweeping coastal scenery, traditional Portuguese towns and some of the finest motorcycling roads in southern Portugal. Leaving the eastern Algarve behind, the route heads west towards Loulé, where quiet inland roads weave through rolling countryside dotted with almond, fig and citrus groves. The approach to Loulé offers a glimpse of authentic Algarve life, far removed from the busy coastal resorts. We pause briefly at one of the Algarve's most famous and authentic market halls, offering visitors a vibrant taste of traditional Portuguese life. Housed in a striking neo-Arabic building dating from 1908, the market's distinctive red and white façade reflects the region's strong Moorish heritage and makes it one of Loulé's most recognisable landmarks.
From Loulé, the ride continues through a network of twisting backroads towards Silves, once the Moorish capital of the Algarve. This section is a particular highlight for riders, with smooth surfaces, flowing bends and beautiful views across fertile valleys. The red sandstone castle dominating Silves provides a striking backdrop and makes an excellent photo stop.
Beyond Silves, the route climbs into the Serra de Monchique, arguably the Algarve's premier motorcycling destination. The ascent along the N267 presents a steady sequence of curves as the landscape changes from lowland orchards to forested mountain slopes. Traffic is usually light, allowing riders to enjoy the rhythm of the road while taking in panoramic views across southern Portugal. Around Monchique, eucalyptus and cork oak forests create a cooler, greener environment that feels a world away from the busy coastline.
Descending from the mountains, the route returns towards Silves before turning east and heading back to the coast. The contrast between the rugged interior and the broad coastal plains adds variety to the day. The roads towards Faro are generally open and enjoyable, providing a relaxed ride through rural Algarve countryside.
The final leg follows the edge of the Ria Formosa lagoon system through Faro and Olhão, where fishing harbours, islands and coastal wetlands create a distinctive maritime atmosphere. Here we have another market. Olhão Market (Mercados de Olhão) is one of the Algarve's most atmospheric coastal markets, located on the waterfront beside the beautiful Ria Formosa lagoon. Housed in two distinctive red-brick market halls dating from the early 20th century, it is renowned for its exceptional fresh seafood, supplied daily by the town's fishing fleet, as well as local fruit, vegetables and regional delicacies. The surrounding promenade is lined with cafés and restaurants, making it an ideal place to pause and soak up the authentic fishing-town atmosphere. On Saturdays, an outdoor farmers' market brings even more colour and energy, offering visitors a wonderful insight into the traditions, flavours and maritime heritage of eastern Algarve life.
Returning to Tavira, riders complete a superb loop that showcases the Algarve's diverse character, combining historic towns, mountain roads, coastal views and some wonderfully rewarding riding from start to finish.

Tavira to Beja circuit ~ 335km / 209 miles ~ 6 hours riding
Leaving Tavira, the route heads east across the Algarve to Vila Real de Santo António, the elegant border town that sits at the mouth of the Guadiana River opposite Spain. From here the road turns north, following the twists and bends of the river that once marked a fiercely contested frontier between two kingdoms. As the landscape becomes more rugged and remote, you arrive at Castelo de Alcoutim, a 14th-century fortress perched high above the Guadiana. Its commanding position offers spectacular views across the river to the Spanish castle of Sanlúcar de Guadiana, a reminder of the region's turbulent past.
Continuing north through the rolling hills of the eastern Algarve and lower Alentejo, the route reaches the remarkable hilltop town of Mértola. Dominating the skyline is Mértola Castle, standing proudly above the whitewashed houses and the Guadiana below. With origins stretching back to Roman, Visigoth and Moorish times, this is one of Portugal's most historic fortified settlements. The castle walls, narrow streets and riverside setting make it one of the highlights of the entire tour.
From Mértola, the ride enters the beautiful Guadiana Valley Natural Park, where winding roads cut through unspoilt countryside rich in wildlife, cork oak forests and dramatic river gorges. The scenery here feels wonderfully remote, offering some of the most enjoyable riding of the day before reaching Vila Nova de São Bento.
Turning west, the landscape opens into the vast plains of the Alentejo. The historic city of Beja is crowned by its impressive medieval castle and towering keep, one of the tallest in Portugal. From the battlements, far-reaching views extend across the surrounding countryside.
The route then heads south through traditional villages and quiet rural roads via São João dos Caldeireiros before returning to Tavira. Combining three magnificent castles, stunning river scenery and some of southern Portugal's finest motorcycling roads, this is a ride that perfectly blends history, culture and unforgettable riding.

Tavira to Almodovar loop 200km / 125 miles ~ 4.5 hours riding
This rewarding circular route from Tavira heads west along the N270 through the rolling hills and traditional villages of the eastern Algarve. Passing Santa Catarina da Fonte do Bispo, the road gradually climbs into the Algarve's rural interior, where traffic thins and the landscape becomes increasingly dominated by cork oak woodlands, eucalyptus forests and expansive views across the surrounding countryside.
A network of quiet secondary roads leads deeper into the Serra do Caldeirão, one of Portugal's most enjoyable motorcycling regions. The roads here are made for riding, with a constant succession of sweeping bends, gentle climbs and flowing descents that encourage a smooth, relaxed pace. Small hamlets appear occasionally among the hills, their whitewashed houses providing a reminder that this is still very much traditional Portugal.
Joining the famous N2 near Barranco Velho adds another highlight to the day. Often referred to as Portugal's answer to Route 66, the N2 offers excellent riding through some of the country's most scenic inland landscapes. Leaving the N2 behind, the route continues through an ever-changing mixture of valleys, ridges and forested hills before arriving in the historic village of Salir, a perfect place to pause for lunch and enjoy the atmosphere of rural Algarve life.
The afternoon ride is every bit as enjoyable. Quiet roads weave north towards Almodôvar before turning back east through some of the most remote countryside on the route. Here the scenery feels wonderfully untouched, with long views across undulating hills, scattered farms and dense stands of cork trees.
The final section passes through the peaceful village of Cachopo before joining the excellent N397 for the return to Tavira. A fitting end to a day that combines some of the Algarve's finest riding roads with spectacular scenery, minimal traffic and an authentic glimpse of Portugal far beyond the busy coastal resorts.

Tavira to Parque Natural do Vale Guadiana circuit ~ 250km / 156 miles ~ 5 hours riding
This route is a wonderful exploration of eastern Algarve and the Baixo Alentejo, combining quiet backroads, remote river valleys and some of the most authentic rural scenery in southern Portugal. Leaving Tavira, the ride quickly escapes the coast and heads into the rolling hills inland, crossing a succession of rivers and seasonal watercourses that shape this rugged landscape. The first miles wind through peaceful countryside before reaching the tiny settlements of Faz Pato and Cortela, where farmsteads dot the sweeping views over the surrounding hills set the tone for the day ahead.
Continuing north, the route crosses the valleys of the Beliche, Odeleite and Foupana rivers, each offering a different perspective on the Algarve's lesser-known interior. Narrow roads weave through the forests, wildflower meadows and remote farming communities, providing an engaging ride with a mixture of flowing bends and gentle climbs. Villages such as Alta Mora, Soudes and Giões offer glimpses of a slower pace of life that has changed little over generations.
The approach to Mértola is particularly memorable, with expansive views opening across the Alentejo countryside. Perched above the Guadiana River, Mértola's historic skyline, dominated by its castle and church, creates a dramatic focal point although on this circuit we do not stop here as it features in another.
Heading south, the character of the landscape gradually changes once again. Quiet roads pass isolated chapels, traditional farms and small villages including São Marcos da Ataboeira and Santa Bárbara de Padrões. Long sweeping stretches through open countryside lead towards the foothills of the Serra do Caldeirão, where the roads become more twisting and rewarding before reaching Barranco Velho.
The final leg traces a scenic route through the Algarve hills before descending towards Tavira. Combining river crossings, historic villages, sweeping landscapes and wonderfully quiet roads, this route offers a rewarding and varied day in the saddle, showcasing some of southern Portugal's most overlooked yet captivating countryside.

Tavira to Faro airport ~ 40km / 25 miles ~ 1 hour
Our final ride departs Tavira heading west along quiet local roads towards Santo Estêvão. The landscape here is typical of the eastern Algarve, a patchwork of small farms, olive groves, citrus orchards and scattered whitewashed cottages that seem largely untouched by the busy coastal resorts. It's a gentle start to the day, allowing everyone to enjoy a last taste of riding in Portugal before the journey home.
Passing through the rural hinterland north of Tavira, the roads wind easily through rolling countryside where cork oaks, carob trees and almond groves have shaped both the scenery and the local economy for generations. This is a very different Algarve from the one most visitors know, quieter, more traditional and distinctly Portuguese in character.
The route then turns south towards Moncarapacho, one of the region's oldest inland villages. Although modest in size, Moncarapacho has a wonderfully authentic feel, with narrow streets, traditional houses and small squares where daily life still revolves around local cafés and shops rather than tourism. Riders should keep an eye out for the village's attractive cobbled streets and the church of Nossa Senhora do Carmo, which dominates the centre of the settlement. It's the sort of place many visitors pass close to without ever discovering.
Continuing westwards, we ride across gently undulating countryside towards Estoi, often regarded as one of the Algarve's hidden gems. The village is best known for the striking Palácio de Estoi, an elegant 19th-century palace distinguished by its pink façade, decorative gardens and impressive terraces. Today operating as a luxury hotel that we used on previous tours, the building remains one of the most unusual landmarks in the Algarve and offers a glimpse into the region's aristocratic past. Nearby are the remains of the Roman villa of Milreu, evidence that this fertile area has been settled for well over two thousand years.
As we leave Estoi, the route joins the historic N2, that runs the entire length of the country from Chaves in the north to Faro in the south. While we only ride a short section today, it provides a fitting conclusion to our journey as we make our way towards Faro.
Gradually the countryside gives way to the outskirts of the city and the nearby wetlands of the Ria Formosa. Before long we arrive at our motorcycle return point close to Faro Airport. Although only a short ride, this final leg offers a relaxed and enjoyable conclusion to the tour, allowing us to savour a few last miles of Algarve scenery before handing back the bikes and beginning our journey home.
