From a motorcyclist's perspective, the Netherlands is often seen as a country to pass through rather than a primary riding destination. Much of the landscape is famously flat, and long, straight roads dominate much of the terrain. However, the south-east of the country offers a pleasant surprise: the so-called Dutch Mountains. While the highest point, Vaalserberg, rises to just 1,059 feet, more of a hill than a mountain, the region provides some of the most enjoyable riding in the country.

Vaalserberg itself is well known from the Amstel Gold Race, and the surrounding area features rolling countryside, gentle climbs and sweeping bends that make for a relaxed and scenic ride. This corner of the Netherlands borders both Belgium and Germany, creating a natural gateway into more dramatic landscapes and offering riders the chance to cross borders with ease.

Although the Netherlands may not deliver the alpine thrills of its neighbours, the south-eastern region provides a charming and enjoyable detour, especially for those travelling between Belgium, Germany and beyond. It's a peaceful, friendly area with tidy villages, well-maintained roads and a unique position at the crossroads of three countries, a pleasant pause before the bigger mountains ahead.
